New editor comes to the View

For the past four years in my capacity as editor of The Queen Anne News, I have come to know the neighbors, streets, staircases, parks, shops and schools in Queen Anne.

I saw Sarah’s compassion and direction at McClure. I saw the extraordinary efforts by David, and parents, at Coe. I saw the optimism and charm of Kari and crew at John Hay and the tireless volunteerism by parents and staff to bring Queen Anne Elementary to life.

I saw Julie bring the market. I saw neighbors, such as Jill, communicating with one another minute-by-minute to report and help police stop an unsavory character roaming the hill. I saw the reason in Ellen’s leadership at Community Council meetings. I saw Jean celebrating a decade-long effort to bring Counterbalance to fruition. I saw the vitality of the neighborhood’s economy. When Peet’s closed, just as quickly Homegrown opened. I saw Sabrina and Tara make sure the tree lights remained for Holiday Magic. I saw Joel reaching out for neighbor input to bring new housing and shops befitting the culture along Queen Anne Avenue North. I saw Debi revitalize Kinnear and Pat making great strides at the Helpline, while many neighbors made even more strides during the Fun Run. I’ll be at the starting line next year – I’m currently signed up for the Portland Marathon Oct. 9.

As a husband and father of three, I value and admire the sense of community in Queen Anne. And as the new editor of the Queen Anne View, I want to uphold that by following Thea’s great example of bringing all the neighborhood news big and small in a timely manner–and have fun doing it.

My wife, kids and I are planning on getting a family dog this year. So, we’ll see you on the sidewalks.

Best,

Myke Folger (AKA Michael)
