Seattle Animal Shelter Pet of the Week: Pablo

Pet of the Week

Meet Pablo, the pepper lover!

Pablo 1This guinea pig is a sweet and friendly connoisseur of all things veggie, especially sweet bell peppers. He will gladly sample and savor your pepper and other veggie scraps. Pablo is social and likes attention. He is looking for a home where he’ll get lots of pets and peppers, and may like to have a spayed female guinea pig companion.

Guinea pigs need a large flat-bottomed living space, with covered areas where they can take shelter and relax if they feel nervous.

Pablo 2Guinea pigs love to run and explore, and should have an hour or more of supervised playtime every day for exercise and stimulation. It’s important to remember that guinea pigs *cannot* use an exercise wheel or ball. Guinea pigs are social animals and do best when kept in pairs or small groups, and enjoy spending time with their people too.

Guinea pigs should be fed a high-quality pellet formulated for guinea pigs, unlimited hay, and fresh leafy greens. (Greens low in calcium such as lettuce, parsley, carrot tops, and cilantro are good choices.) Guinea pigs also require a vitamin C supplement; offering a slice or two of orange or bell pepper daily is an easy and delicious way to provide the vitamin C they need.

Pablo 3There is a low fee to adopt a guinea pig from the Seattle Animal Shelter; however, you are expected to make a lifetime commitment to your adopted piggies, and the primary caregiver must be a responsible adult. Your piggy should be treated as an integral part of the family. Your guinea pigs will also need regular nail trims and vet checks. With good care and lots of love, guinea pigs can live to be 5 to 7 years old.

Come visit Pablo (SAS ID#A30728474) in the Critter Room at the Seattle Animal Shelter. He can’t wait to meet you!
