Lakeside School opening The Downtown School on Lower Queen Anne

Posted on July 12th, 2017 by Laura Fonda

There’s been much discussion about the need for additional schools in the area, especially high schools. Lakeside School, the high school that Bill Gates and Paul Allen attended, is opening a “Lakeside affiliated micro-school” near Seattle Center.

The private school, named The Downtown School, will open at 204 Warren Ave N, a 1927 brick building owned by the Archdiocese of Seattle. The building was previously home to Sacred Heart School and Waldorf High School (photo from Lakeside School):

Lakeside has a lease for the space and will update it in advance of opening in the fall of 2018. At full enrollment, the school will serve 160 students in grades 9 through 12. Tuition will be $17,000 per year, which is almost half of Lakeside School’s 2018 tuition rate of $33,280.

The Downtown School will begin accepting applications this fall for students entering 9th and 10th grade in the 2018-2019 school year. For more information, visit Lakeside School’s website.

    Questions:

    1) The Downtown School is located in Uptown?

    2) How is a school that serves only 160 students going to solve the need for additional high schools in the area?

    3) How will a graduate of The Downtown compare with a graduate of Lakeside?
