This Friday’s unusual fundraiser for Haiti earthquake relief, that would have had 20 people vying for $5,000 by being the last one to keep their hand on a rowing boat inside the Seattle Center Pavilion, has been postponed until next year.
The Lake Union Crew Outreach Foundation was set to host the Hands on for Haiti competition Friday, but organizer Kevin Fujii called it off yesterday and has rescheduled it for Feb 10, 2012.
“We may be getting some from the Seattle Storm and the NBA if its work stoppage goes on,” he said.
Former UW basketball stars Jon Brockman and Isaiah Thomas who now play for the NBA could not make the Nov. 18 date, but may be able to participate in the fundraiser in February. An invitation also went out to Haiti native and internationally renown musician Wyclef Jean. Jean, who has 2,104,250 followers on Twitter, retweeted the invitation, which may spur donations and participation.
Ginny Gelder, one of the owners of the Seattle Storm and a former Olympic rower is working to get some Seattle Storm members on board, as well, Fujii said. There was to be a maximum of 20 competitors for the event, but if there are more, Fujii said they’ll put another rowing shell out there.
